Retail Therapy on Gran Canaria

One of the advantages of shopping in Gran Canaria is that there are lower rates of VAT and import taxes, so there are many items which can be bought fairly cheaply there. These items include alcohol, tobacco, jewellery, perfumes and electrical items and there are numerous duty free shops in the region. The only problem with this is that items such as alcohol and tobacco are limited in the amount visitors are allowed to take home with them.

Gift shopping on the other hand is easy as well as inexpensive. Locally made crafts make excellent souvenirs. Popular items include the baskets which are made from banana leaves, pottery items, embroidered items and felt hats. There is an outlet called FEDAC, of which there are several in Gran Canaria, which also operates stalls at local markets. For serious shoppers, the city of Las Palmas is the best option. It has a wide variety of stores, from high street names to designer boutiques and there are plenty of shopping centres to visit. These include La Ballena, the Calle Mayor de Triana and El Muelle, all of which are unique.

The outlet village of Las Terrazas is another popular option for shoppers. There are a variety of shops with plenty of parking facilities, and discounts can be found on designer items. A visitor can easily spend an entire day there, with plenty of dining outlets available. Designer names can also be found in the upmarket resort of Meloneras where tourists can find something other than souvenir shops.

If you decide to make expensive shopping purchases while on holiday make sure you have an adequate travel insurance policy in case they get lost or damaged on the way home. It might also be a good idea to arrange your travel money before you go so that you can save on credit card fees when you shop. Remember that most market stalls on Gran Canaria do not accept credit cards so you will need cash.
