Gran Canaria’s Growing Gay Scene

Gran Canaria, the most heavily populated island in the Canary Islands, is a volcanic island that is situated off the Moroccan coastline of northwestern Africa.  With its sub-tropical climate, the island offers sunshine in abundance along with its breathtaking scenery.  Gran Canaria holidays have always been popular, however, it is also a growing LGBT travel destination, as Gran Canaria’s welcoming atmosphere is just as inviting as its beautiful weather.

This warm and sunny island is a haven for many LGBT travellers who come from all corners of the world. There are many gay-friendly hotels that can be easily found, and the local tourism industry makes a special effort to help gay and lesbian travellers feel at home on this beautiful island.

If someone is visiting for the first time, and is looking for easy access to gay nightlife and beaches, the popular and vibrant beaches of Masplalomas or Playa del Ingles are some of the best places to stay.  In both of these areas, there are many complexes that cater to the LGBT community, such as Club Tucanes and Club Mancha.  Villas Blancas, for example, is run exclusively for men and allows sunbathing in the nude.  These places are perfect for the first time visitor.

Much of Gran Canaria’s vibrant gay nightlife is centred around the Avenida de Tirajana, City Centre, and Yumbo Centre.  Las Palmas mixes the best of both worlds, combining traditional Spanish atmosphere and architecture with a thriving gay scene.  In addition to numerous gay saunas, clubs and bars, Las Palmas also offers popular and classical concerts, theatres, galleries and shopping.
